5 Ways to Motivate Yourself When Working Towards Your Goals

April Malmsteen highlights the importance of motivation when you're working toward your goals.

Sometimes, no matter how dedicated or passionate you are about what you’re working toward, you feel like you have no motivation to keep pushing forward. No matter what your goal is, there are going to be times when you feel discouraged. However, it’s vitally important that you do not let these moments get to you. Use these tips to motivate yourself in order to reach your dreams.

Define your goal

Spend some time thinking about what it is you actually want to achieve. If it’s financial, give it a dollar amount. If it’s health, find a way to quantify it. How else will you know when you have achieved that goal? Weight loss can be measured on a scale. Credit card balances can be monitored easily, too. Whatever the goal, make sure that there’s a concrete finish line.

Know why you’re doing it

This may require some soul-searching. Make sure the goals you have for yourself are your own. One person may want to be debt-free so that he can put all his extra cash into savings for a down payment. Another may be trying to fit into an old favorite shirt. Someone else might want to start their own business. Whatever your reasoning, make sure you identify and connect with it.

Break down the end goal

Give yourself a realistic deadline for your goal. Since you have clearly defined it in a measurable way, it will be simple to break it up into weekly chunks. Make sure that working towards your goal is ingrained in your life as a necessity – just like eating or sleeping. This way, you’re preparing yourself for little wins instead of little quits along the way to the finish line. Having a plan is a surefire way to success.

Be consistent

Carve out time in a planner to devote to your weekly chunk and stick to the plan no matter what. The only difference between winners and losers is that the winners consistently get up when they fall, show up when others don’t, and never give up when it’s inconvenient. No matter the goal – if you prioritize it, again and again, you will make it a reality.

Do it anyway

There will be days and weeks when other things in life come in and pull your attention away from your weekly wins. There will be times when it’s hard to do it, but you must do it anyway. You don’t have to want to do something or feel like doing it every second of every day in order to get done. This is the secret to motivation – don’t wait to be motivated. Decide what you want, and don’t stop until it’s yours.
