The term “boss” often sounds powerful and scary, but it doesn’t have to be this way. A boss is a person who is given the responsibility to lead an organization or a group of people, just like a leader. But while leaders are more often than not bosses as well, not all bosses can be considered true leaders.

If you own or a boss in a company, your goal should be to become more of a leader than just an ordinary boss. You want your employees and colleagues to treat you as their leader. But this isn’t something you can ask for. Respect is given to leaders who deserve it. So, what can you do to become a good leader and a better boss at the same time?

#1 – Think of Yourself as a Leader

The best way to guide people is to be one of them and be a good example. Effective leaders are approachable and easy to get along with. They consider themselves as one of the members of the team, rather than someone who’s superior to everybody. You can’t just tell your people what to do; you have to show it to them.


#2 – Be an Active Listener

If your team sees and feels that you are really listening to what they have to say or their opinions, they are likely to be more proactive, cooperative, and motivated. You can hold one-on-one meetings from time to time just to get an idea of how your employees are doing at work, what they may be struggling with, and how you can make their life easier at work.


#3 – Do Not Overwork Yourself

Bosses have a tendency to overwork, which is not recommended by experts. Even if you own the company you’re managing, you still need to find time for yourself and for your loved ones as well. Give yourself time to enjoy your hobbies or to relax. Taking regular breaks from work will be beneficial for you, both physically and mentally.


#4 – Stay Focused on the Positive

No matter how bad the business or the industry is doing, this is not a reason for you to treat your employees poorly. You need to take notice of the good things they are doing, and if your business is having problems, you might as well be open to your team about it. That way, they will feel that you are considering them as a vital part of your organization, and this will motivate them even more to make positive contributions for the company.


#5 – Welcome Feedback

A good leader or manager is not afraid of criticisms. In fact, successful leaders ask for feedback on a regular basis and they use this as motivation to be better. What your people say about you is a good basis of the changes that need to be made to make your leadership better and more effective.
